On day 2 we decided to go to the Corvin castle situated in the city of Hunedoara. But before that, we headed to the Timisoara city center to enjoy a morning coffee and some breakfast. The city felt much different during the day than the day before during the night. During the night, the town was fully lit in the old city center. One of the streets was probably even brighter during the night than during the day. The lightning was really nice, giving the city an exciting vibe.
But now, back to this morning. After a little stroll through the city, we reached the city center. We weren’t really sure where to eat, so we opened Google maps and found one of the higher rated breakfast places. It was just a couple minutes away, so without a thought, we set on foot to get there.
The place is called Neata Omelette Bistro. While the prices were not the lowest, the food was really good. I ordered an egg Benedict, since I have never had this before. For those unfamiliar, this is a very basic dish on paper. It is just a poached egg atop some bread and covered with the Hollandaise sauce made of egg yolks, butter and some lemon juice. Bellow the egg was also smoked salmon, which greatly complemented the taste of the egg and the sauce.
My friends on the other hand ordered an English breakfast, a falafel menu and a shakshuka (a dish made of goat cheese and vegetables). Along that, we ordered either coffee or Earl Grey tea with milk – one of my favourite types of tea. The tea was a fine addition to an already amazing breakfast.
With a full stomach , we decided to continue towards Corvin castle. The ride to the castle was a bit longer this time, but nothing when compared to the day before. It felt like two hours, but it might have been more or less. I wasn’t really paying attention, I was just observing the surroundings. Contrary to the nature that we had seen previously, this part of the country was a bit more hilly – or perhaps I should just say that this part of the country isn’t completely flat, since there aren’t really and hills like the ones we have in Slovenia. The road lead us past an interesting hill that looked like a volcano from afar. We wondered what it is, since obviously there couldn’t be a volcano in the middle of Romania. Turns out it was just a stone quarry.
Not long after we actually arrived at the Corvin castle. Given that I have been to a lot of castles before, I won’t give a detailed description of the castle or anything like that. Having seen so many castles, I don’t find them as interesting anymore. But the castle was indeed pretty cool. What stood out the most in comparison to the other castles that I have been too (mostly in Slovenia and Austria), was the shape of the building. Everything was a bit more round. Most of the castle towers had a cone like shape, similar to the church from the day before. The castle also felt a bit more “bricky” if I could say so. The colours weren’t consistent, because the castle is built of different materials – different parts of the castle are built from different materials. And regarding the “bricky” look of it, a large part of the castle was built using bricks of all sorts, which gave it this look. The insides of the castle were turned into a museum presentintvsome history of the castle and surroundings and like usually, the various ways of torturing people. Tens of different ways to punish people, sometimes even for the pettiest of crimes.
After this followed the lunch. And once again it did not disappoint. The prices were normal (though much cheaper when compared to Slovenia and majority of Europe) and the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered a pork chop with puree and an addition of truffles. As a side dish, I also ordered a tomato and arugula salad. The puree was really tasty – I love the taste of truffles – and the pork chops were really soft. The salad was also perfectly seasoned, so I left with a full stomach and a smile on my face. I am a simple man, food is the joy of my life.
Once again, it was time to go to the town of Alba Iulia. Hopefully I haven’t written the name wrong. And on our way to this town we passed the famous gypsy village. A true gypsy village, where the richest of them live. The place was full of huge mansions that, frankly, reminded of the Thailand temples that I have seen on YouTube. I will attach a picture or two and let the reader judge this for him/herself.
Being a bit low on time, I will end today’s post here. But to sum the rest of the day up, we arrived at our hotel, then took a bit of a break and in the evening took a ride to the town and explored its older part. Believe it or not, but once again, we ordered some food – pancakes, a pizza and some drinks. And after that we basically headed home and it was the end of the day. Thus, the second day ends. It was once again lots of fun and I am looking forward to tomorrow!
